when I built my Surly up I bought a set of Planet X Frog Bollox canti brakes. stopping  was crap, but I persevered. new KoolStop pads helped, but braking was still way beneath par.

The rear brake on the Hiver was even pads (Again) and they were still crap. I overtightened a pinch bolt on the straddlle cable barrel clamp and sheared the bolt. PX were useless , Paul Milnes and most local shops, even ebay couldnt find me a replacement. so it was time for a new brakes.

I looked into a set of TRP cx9s, but apparently they have to run really close to the rim.. not ideal for some of the crap i ride in20130103_104945

.. so in  the end I got a set of CR720s ( rear only)

Easier to set up ( though I dont like the straddle pinch bolt arrangement) and a massive difference riding , I can now actually stop and did a few test drifts on the fast berm in the woods..I did notice my heel clipping the right arm occasionally though.

I will leave the front as it is until it is time to replace pads, and maybe keep my eye out for a set of CX9s for summer riding.

more Campag woes….

I went out for a ride this lunchtime.. booted and spurred, ready to go…

to be thwarted… my rear wheel seems to have picked up a broken spoke as well as a few loose ones.. how the chuff this happened in the garage overnight after yesterdays ride.

While giving the bike a once over I noticed that the spider bolt on the back of the crank has dropped out…

So here is the running total…

1)Crank bolts loosened despite threadlock.. I lost 4 causing the inner chain ring to fail.

2) Rear mech locking and turning itself inside out.

3) Front mech outside cage worn through.

4) Another lost spider bolt.

5)Broken teeth on a Genuine Campag cassette ( three sprockets about 10 teeth)

6) and now Proton Wheel spokes.

7) the spider bolt on the back of the crank arm.( expensive one)

The reason I went to Campag in the first place was that it ‘Wears in not out’..but experience certainly proves otherwise. they feel better than Shimano, look better, and dont have those annoying cables parallel with the bars. I also like the easy trimming that is possible with the 9 speed what point do you say that it is crap and go back to Shimano?

Oh Shit!!!!

I look down in horror, glaring accusingly at my back wheel, with rising concern and the sickening realisation that all is not well.
It shouldn’t look like that, how the hell did that happen. Impossibly contorted, I can feel the tension, as the rear mech quivers, waiting for something to give, to relieve the tension and send springs and bolts shrapnel like arcing into the undergrowth …
Extrications, roadside repairs and I am off limping home, turning an impossible gear , knees complaining as I grind homeward. My mind churning, worried.
A pang of fear that I could lose an old friend.
